Roppongi Hills is a new urban center and one of Japan’s largest integrated property developments, located in the Roppongi district of Minato, Tokyo. The development incorporates a number of different spaces including an eye-catching Louis Vuitton store.

In a departure from their traditional brand philosophy, the retail space is housed in an existing shell and incorporates a bold interior design with a dramatic wedge-shaped atrium. When it came to lighting the space, leading US lighting designer George Sexton planned to install gimbal fittings manufactured by local lighting company Yamagiwa in the high ceiling. However, access for maintenance and adjustability was clearly an issue, so Sexton approached RCL. In response, a remote controlled gimbal fitting was designed, manufactured and delivered in just four months. Ultimately 550 recessed remote controlled fixtures were installed for the project. They allowed George Sexton and, subsequently, the visual merchandising team to concentrate the light on what they want the shoppers to look at rather than lighting the whole store with uniform bright white light. The lighting scheme was a winner of the coveted RED lighting award for Best Lighting Project and in the same year won the GE Edison Award of Merit.
